Leadership And The Actions It Entails - 1175 Words
The study of leadership and the actions it entails can be dated back as far as 2300 B.C (Bass and Stodill, 1990), however in the modern day the study has evolved greatly, with theories and writers inputting their views and constantly updating and changing the definitions of what they believe leadership to be. It is argued that the study of leadership has ââ¬Å"almost as many definition as there are persons who have attempted to define the conceptâ⬠(Bolden, 2005), however the majority of the definitions all appear to arrive at similar conclusions as to what the action of leadership entails. A well-known definition of leadership was proposed in 2012 by Day et al, in which they described the leadership process as being ââ¬Å"a purpose-driven action that brings change or transformation based on ideal, visions, symbols and emotional exchanges between leader and followerâ⬠(Day and Antonakis, 2012). Bennis argues that leadership is ââ¬Å"the capacity to translate vision into realityâ⬠(Maxwell, 2004). Bill Gates then furthered these two definitions by, stating that leadership is the ââ¬Å"ability to empower othersâ⬠(Kruse, 2013). As can be seen by the suggested definitions, the role of a leader appears to be the ability to influence the behaviour of others, but how doe s the leader gain this ability to change the behaviours of other? Is it something that is learnt over time, or it is a set of characteristics that leaders are born with?
